Characteristics of the Interior

Colonial interior design is one with no clutter, and simplified from the Victorian style by the use of one, or very similar paint colors.  As well as only one fabric pattern if any.  If wallpaper is used at s a lighter color, ceilings were usually left without fussy carvings.  Chippendale-style chairs are common with the interior design, and so are mirrors, used mostly in public rooms.  The ceilings were usually left without fussy carvings.  All high wainscoting, which might have been polished oak, painted colonial white (this can be seen in the dining room).  This was usually used in the halls, dining rooms, and libraries. Large expensive looking pictures hung on ropes  wall, but smaller pictures were hung invisibly from the wall.

Chintz (flower pattern) was often the only pattern used in rooms. Light colors were recommended for bedrooms, light pinks, blues purple, yellow, grays and lots of whites are used in all rooms.
Large four-poster beds, higher than the usual bed, curtains, rag rugs fill the ideal for a simple bedroom.  They were also icons of the era along with windsor chairs. Small tables or chairs with short legs, a little desk, are in the corners of rooms. Every piece of furniture in the house should be functional and used, and proprotionate to the room size. Portraits of the owners, with their silhouettes, and old looking prints were popular in the public areas of the home.  Sheraton, Hepplewhite, and Chippendale pieces are all common styles in the Colonial era.
